Last October, I had the honor of photographing Katie and Matt’s wedding at Leopold’s Mississippi Gardens in Minneapolis. Katie left no detail overlooked and all her planning paid off–everything about this wedding was picture-perfect.
Matt’s reaction during their first look was so sweet:
I was obsessively checking the weather the morning of the wedding, as the forecast called for a 100 percent chance of rain that afternoon. Heather ran around to three different Target locations in the north metro to find the perfect clear umbrellas. I’ve shot a handful of weddings and sessions in the rain–a light drizzle at most, but when it started raining halfway through their ceremony, it was an absolute downpour.
The next two photos were shot by Heather and they are my favorite!
Following the ceremony, guests cozied up inside and enjoyed cocktail hour. Fleur de Lis did the flowers and centerpieces and they were STUNNING.
Because we got rained out, Katie, Matt and I set aside an hour for sunrise photos the following week. While I know the candid images are what tell the story of a wedding day, I’m still a firm believer that portraits of a couple are also paramount to documenting the start of their story, and often, it’s one portrait that becomes that couple’s first heirloom for their family. So it was really important to me to ensure that we had time to make a portrait of Katie and Matt, one that I hope will be printed and passed on for generations.
It was my first time shooting at sunrise (how?!) and it is now my favorite time of day to shoot. To all my 2018 and 2019 couples: I dare you to schedule your engagement session at sunrise. Just look at this light:
