Over the past few years I have found myself more and more drawn to and inspired by film photography. The soft focus, the grain, the muted color–it makes me weak in the knees, it’s all just so damn gorgeous. I’ve spent hours trying to emulate the look in Lightroom with every preset known to man, but nothing compares to film. Creamy grainy soft beautiful film, Iloveyousomuch. I finally took the plunge and invested in a film camera, a Contax 645. For non-photographers, the Contax shoots medium format film, or 120mm. I get 16 frames per roll. It’s a big camera, I have to meter before I use it and it just slows me down overall. BUT. (and I’ve only shot a few rolls)….BUT, it’s as close to heaven as my photos will ever be. I am hooked on film and hope that I only keep learning.
Here are some digital and film comparisons, with the film shot always appearing on the left:
Right now I’m slowly incorporating film into my wedding and engagement sessions and I hope to one day be 50/50 and shoot hybrid. Until then, if I pause during our session and hold a light meter up to your face, please just indulge me that 2-3 minutes to shoot a few frames on film. 🙂
